Friendly Corporation Organized for the First Time by Chinese Government
Shenzhen, China, June
2005 – Fuji Xerox of Shenzhen Ltd., one of Fuji Xerox’s manufacturing sites,
was recognized by the State Environmental Protection Administration of China
(SEPA) on May 26 as being an environment friendly corporation. The
certification, which is for independent industrial companies in China, was
granted following an onsite examination in April 2004 and a 10-day public
reviewing conducted from July 30. Fuji Xerox of Shenzhen was the only Japanese
company as well as the only company in the Guanzhou region of China that has
received the certification.SEPA promotes environmental preservation
activities in manufacturing industries in China and aims to further the mutual
development of the environment and the economy. The agency initiated the
certification activity in 2003, and 11 corporations including Fuji Xerox of
Shenzhen have been awarded the certification, which is positioned as the highest
possible honor bestowed by the Chinese government for environmental-conscious
activities. The investigation by SEPA covers 22 items in three categories
– environment, management and products – with main areas including the
following:1 Restriction of pollutants
2 Attainment of ISO14001 EMS
(environmental management system)
3 A waste recycling rate at a domestic
industry-leading level
4 Workplace hygiene in manufacturing departments
5
Nonuse of prohibited substances in products and manufacturing processes
6
Forestation of more than 35 percent of the siteFuji Xerox of Shenzhen,
established as a printer manufacturing facility in 1995, obtained ISO14001 EMS
certification in November 2000. It constantly advances a stance of being
eco-friendly, concentrating in particular on three areas: boosting environmental
efficiency by conserving energy and electricity; reducing resources and
recycling waste; and, reducing use of harmful chemical substances.A
zero-waste promotion committee was inaugurated in September 2003 to increase
environmental awareness among employees through in-house promotion and training,
encouraging the sorting of waste, conserving of paper, restricting use of
dry-cell batteries, all which would result in the reduction of waste. At
the same time, the company has been accelerating the recycling of household
waste by using it as a viable power source. As a result, it has increased its
waste-recycling rate from 37.5 percent in fiscal 2002 to 94.5 percent in fiscal
2003, and finally achieved “Zero Waste”note in December 2004. In addition,
employees contribute to greening of the manufacturing site by shouldering the
expense of planting seedlings, with 29 trees planted to
date.Note
Fuji Xerox defines “zero waste” as a waste landfill rate of
0.5 percent (by weight) or lower, and the achievement is subject to maintaining
a recycling rate of 99.5 percent or higher for three consecutive
months.Fuji Xerox has transferred its experience in achieving
zero-emissions at its Ebina Center and Takematsu Center to Fuji Xerox of
Shenzhen to develop leading-edge environmental conservation activities in China.
Fuji Xerox of Shenzhen’s environmental promotion manager stayed at
Ebina/Takematsu Centers for one month to acquire the know-how accumulated at
these sites, and combined with Fuji Xerox of Shenzhen’s knowledge, promoted
activities throughout the company. These activities have been highly evaluated
in the awarding of the certification.Fuji Xerox of Shanghai Ltd., a
manufacturing site in China where mid- and low-end copying machines and toner
cartridges are developed and produced, also achieved Zero Waste in January this
year.Eco-Friendly Activities at Fuji Xerox and its
AffiliatesFuji Xerox and its affiliates promote the attainment of
ISO14001 EMS certification as a fundamental environmental strategy. As of
December 2004, the number of ISO14001-certified sites totaled 53 in Japan and 21
in other countries/regions, including R&D facilities, manufacturing plants
and sales departments. Fuji Xerox will continuously strive to realize a
sustainable society by commanding a global-leading level of environmental
management.Fuji Xerox of Shenzhen Overview
