    Giant Eagle inks printer-refill deal

Supermarket operator Giant Eagle Inc. is teaming with Island Ink-Jet for a “drop and shop” printer ink cartridge refill service, the companies said Thursday.

Giant Eagle, the Pittsburgh area’s largest grocery chain, said customers can drop empty ink cartridges at photo processing counters and have them refilled — the price ranges from $4.95 to $17.95 — while they shop.

“The partnership with Island Ink-Jet presents an opportunity for us to offer our customers a convenient and time-saving service at a great value,” said Giant Eagle Director of Photo Mark Lancia.

Island Ink-Jet, a Canadian chain that arrived in the Pittsburgh area in 2003, so far has three Giant Eagle in-store locations — one in the Waterworks Plaza Giant Eagle in Fox Chapel and two in Erie, Pa.

Island Ink-Jet has five other area locations — kiosks in Ross, Robinson, Bethel Park and Monroeville, and a full store in Oakland.

“People who use our refill service not only save money and benefit the environment by reducing the burden on landfills, but they can do it without making a special trip,” said Island Ink-Jet area developer Dan Van Dyke.
