Green Fingers Come out Again at Fuji Xerox Printers
Improving Sydney’s water quality with the planting of 500
trees
SYDNEY, Australia – May 2005 – Fuji Xerox Printers, the
leading provider of quality print solutions, is continuing its ongoing
commitment to environmental initiatives, via a partnership with Greening
Australia to plant five hundred native trees and shrubs in an effort to improve
the quality of Sydney’s water.
Involving a team of 40 community volunteers and FXP staff
members, the planting will occur on Wednesday, May 25 at Arthursleigh Farm,
Marulan, near Goulburn – a site badly affected by erosion causing serious
turbidity of water flowing into the nearby Wollondilly River and directly
impacting Warragamba Dam, which stores approximately 80 per cent of Sydney’s
water supply.
“The main objective of the Arthursleigh planting project is
to reduce the release of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and ultimately the
Greenhouse effect,” said Brian Cumberland, Operations Manager for Greening
Australia. “We’re extremely pleased by the involvement of both the University of
Sydney who own the site and the Fuji Xerox Printers team, as they are making a
contribution to a land care issue which impacts so many.”
“We were very impressed with the success of last years’
planting at Holdens Creek, an area that was badly degraded in the Canberra
bushfires of January 2003. The survival rate is running at 88 per cent, which is
excellent especially given the dry conditions,” Cumberland continued.
“While planting is only one of many initiatives FXP
undertakes each year to support the environment, it’s certainly one of the most
rewarding when we hear of results like this,” said Peter Diprose, Regional
Environment Manager, Fuji Xerox Printers. “We are excited to have the
opportunity to assist with the drainage line erosion on Arthursleigh,
particularly because it impacts on our water supply and Sydney, Illawarra and
the Blue Mountains are currently experiencing drought conditions.”
An eco-friendly company, Fuji Xerox Printers achieved the
following in 2004 as a result of the environmental initiatives:
Achieved AELA Good Environmental Choice certification for 8
printers CO2 Reduction (-37.2% or 57.04 Tonnes) Tree Planting – 6000 trees and
native flora planted during FY04 (~107 tonne CO2 absorbed … carbon neutral apart
from SCM) Significant reduction in paper consumption (-19% approx 240,000 pages)
Recycled media usage increased (from 13% to 44%) Conversion of fleet vehicles to
LPG or 4 cylinder vehicles (73%) Recycling and reuse of packaging materials
(93%)
FXP has also committed funds for Greening Australia to direct
seed 7,500 native trees and shrubs via 22.5kms of tree line in spring 2005 to
ensure ongoing support of the area.
Photography of the tree planting will be available 26 May
2005. For photography, please email rachael.norcott@maxaustralia.com.au or call
