HP Appoints New Head of Software

Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) on Wednesday promoted longtime software executive Bill Veghte to the job of chief operating officer, as CEO Meg Whitman continues to reorganize the giant commercial tech company.

Whitman is also bringing in George Kadifa, a former partner at the Silver Lake private equity firm, to run the HP software division that Veghte had been leading.

The news follows last week’s announcement that the company will cut 27,000 jobs or 8 percent of its global workforce, as it attempts to counter a decline in revenue and profit. HP, which is also combining its printing and personal computer divisions, is one of the world’s biggest tech companies, but it has struggled to keep up with market shifts in some of its key businesses.

HP has not had a chief operating officer in recent years. In a statement, the company said Veghte will work with Whitman, who was named CEO last fall, to "help further accelerate the company’s strategy."

Veghte is a former Microsoft executive who was hired at HP in 2010 by then-CEO Mark Hurd. In addition to running HP’s software division, a relatively small business that HP hopes to expand, he has served as chief strategy officer under Whitman.

Kadifa was an executive at IBM before he joined
Silver Lake, where he was responsible for improving operations at companies the firm had invested in, according to HP.
