HP LAUNCHES ANTI-COUNTERFEIT CARTRIDGE (SPYWARE) SOFTWARE

Company says it has found nine million fake HP products in four years
HP is debuting its Toner Cartridge Authentication software in the face of increasing counterfeiting both globally and in the EMEA region."I am proud to announce a new software which makes it possible for all users of HP supplies to make sure it is a real product, not a counterfeit, not only manually but via a server and via authentication," said Andrea Gebhard, LaserJet Supplies, Imaging and Printing Group, Middle East, Mediterranean and Africa.

The software can be downloaded from HP for LaserJet printers, Inkjet printers already have the software embedded within the firmware."From a LaserJet perspective, the 1000, 2000 and 3000 series is supported as of today. Whenever we introduce a new LaserJet printer, it will of course be supported. In 2012 we hope that all products in the ink segment will be supported with authentication," said Gebhard.

The software is comprised of three components working together. The smart chip technology contains authentication information which is collected by the Authentication software and transmitted to the authentication web service. That service then checks the data and once it is validated, it is sent back to the software, which shows the result in a pop-up box on a users’ screen. The whole process takes about a minute, according to HP."Either you get a message saying no risk detected, all packages are original or you get a big, bold risk detected message. If you get the risk detected message, we suggest you also click the link directly to the anti-counterfeit page," said Gebhard.

According to Amin Mortazavi, general manager, Imaging and Printing Group, HP Middle East, the new software has a 100% detection rate for counterfeit products, but users do need to be careful."If you pull out your own genuine cartridge then put it back again it [the software] will tell you this has been used, so you need to be careful. But if it tells you it is non-genuine HP then you need to take action," said Mortazavi.

The HP Cartridge Authentication Software will shortly be available in Arabic for the local market, but is currently only available in English.Over the last four years in the EMEA region, HP has discovered approximately nine million counterfeit products, stemming from 2,000 leads given to HP by its partners, enterprises and the public."Those people gave us calls, sent in emails, saying we are assuming we have detected counterfeits, please help us in proving that. Of those 2,000 leads, 1,000 investigations occurred and we had 500 enforcements through law authorities," said Gebhard.

Over the last four years, HP has also conducted approximately 3,000 partner authentications, where the company checked that all its partners were supplying end-users with original HP products.HP is continually training its customers and partners on how to identify and report counterfeit products.

Globally, in the space of four years, HP has found 30 million counterfeit products.
In addition to the Cartridge Authentication Software, HP advises that there are three basic steps that every user of HP supplies can take to identify the authenticity of an HP product, including checking for holographic security labels on the packaging tabs, checking the quality of the packaging and checking the quality and finish of the cartridge itself.HP is also providing videos online that show what a genuine holographic label should look like.
