MEMPHIS, Tenn. – One Memphis City School student got more than
70 brand new computers donated to her school.Last year 5th grade
student Kristina White wrote a letter to Hewlett Packard, requesting new
computers for Sherwood Elementary School. The company agreed and
Thursday the high tech hardware was unveiled to the students.”It was a
persuasive letter,” says Kristina. “So if he could give back to the
community that the whole neighborhood could hear about it.”And persuade
the company she did. HP donated more than 70 brand new desk top
computers to the school. HP says it was Kristina’s letter that spurred
the donation.”It was really touching in both her appreciation of HP as a
company as well as her passion for the school and belief in how
technology could help the school,” says Brian Becker, with Hewlett
    Packard.

Superintendent Kriner Cash says in a time when money is
tight, relationships with companies like hp become essential for
updating the classroom and knowledge of technology.”They’ve been
gracious not only in the donation of some really top grade computer
hardware equipment, but they’re also trained all our staff on how to use
this sophisticated new equipment,” says Cash.”Schools struggle to get
enough technology out in their environment to really make it a
centerpiece of how they teach,” says Becker. “So we saw technology
within the school, but a limited amount of it.”Kristina was in 5th grade
when she wrote to HP, now in middle school, she will not benefit from
the technology, but says she’s excited to be able to help her alma
mater.”The students get to have something because when I was here, they
were less fortunate,” says Kristina. “Now they have the computers, they
have a chance to catch up.”
