HP Resolves Ink Cartridge Patent Infringement Lawsuit With Brazil’s Multilaser

PALO ALTO, CA, May 2012 today announced that it has amicably resolved patent litigation with Brazil-based Multilaser Industrial Ltda. relating to HP’s integrated printhead inkjet cartridges.(1)

As part of the settlement, Multilaser acknowledges that HP’s patents are valid and were infringed upon. Multilaser has agreed to stop selling the cartridges in question in Brazil and in other countries where HP has corresponding patent rights. Multilaser also will reimburse part of the litigation costs to HP.

"HP invests billions of dollars in developing innovative products for our customers and is committed to pursuing legal enforcement to protect our technological innovations — not only the company’s intellectual property, but also the value we deliver to our customers," said Stephen Nigro, senior vice president, Inkjet and Web Services Business, Imaging and Printing Group, HP. "We will continue to monitor the marketplace for intellectual property infringements as part of our commitment to worldwide testing and enforcement efforts."

The settlement is based on litigation filed by HP in the Brazilian State Court of Sao Paulo on April 12, 2011, alleging the importation and sale of HP-compatible inkjet print cartridges in Brazil that infringe on HP patents.

    (1) The settlement covers a number of cartridges, including HP 56, HP 57, HP 60, HP 74, HP 75, HP 92 and HP 93. In countries outside of Brazil, the HP 60, HP 74, HP 75, HP 92 and HP 93 ink cartridges may be known by different product numbers.
