HP scouting Thailand to set up a $100m printer plant
Hewlett-Packard, a US-based manufacturer of software and computer products, is planning its second manufacturing facility outside China with investment of more than US$100 million (Bt3 billion) and Thailand is one of the potential sites, Industry Minister Pongsvas Svasti said yesterday.

Pongsvas said HP senior vice president Reinhard Winkler and Cal-Comp Electronics (Thailand) vice chairman Shyh-yong Shen met with him and informed him of HP’s interest in investing in a second inkjet-printer plant. The company is looking for a good location for its plant in Southeast Asia and Thailand is among the potential sites as Cal-Comp Electronics, HP’s supplier for printed circuit boards (PCBs) for its China plant, has two manufacturing sites in Phetchaburi and Samut Sakhon provinces.

He said that according to Cal-Comp Electronics, HP would spend more than $100 million to produce the inkjet printers with production capacity of a million units per year. If HP decides to choose Thailand for its investment, Cal-Comp’s facility in Phetchaburi province will be the manufacturing site for the product.

"HP said the decision would be made soon," Pongsvas revealed.

He said that before making a decision, HP wanted to know about the government’s water-management plan and the incentives it would offer through the Board of Investment. HP is also considering other countries in Southeast Asia for its investment.

He said HP wanted to invest in its

second plant outside China as a risk-diversification policy.

Pongsvas does not think HP is concerned about the increase in daily wages in Thailand, which will take effect in April, as the electronics industry pays wages higher than what the regulation stipulates.

"This is a good news, as it confirms that Thailand is still attractive to foreign investors," he said.

Besides HP, the president of Suzuki (Thailand), Takayuki Sugiyama, also met with the Industry Ministry yesterday to inform it about the commencement of eco-car production.

Pongsvas said Suzuki would hold an event to introduce its eco-car on March 21. Suzuki will produce eco-cars at Hemaraj Industrial Estate, with production capacity of 100,000 units per year. Half of them will be for the domestic market and half for export.
