HP printersHewlett-Packard has reached a settlement in a US court case
accusing faults in over a thousand different printers sold over a period
spanning nine years. The case (HP Inkjet Printer Litigation, Case No.
C05-3580 JF) was based on three separate lawsuits. One claimed that HP
‘low on ink’ messages confused customers into prematurely replacing
cartridges. Another claimed certain HP cartridges stopped working on
undisclosed expiration dates, and the last claimed some HP printers use
colour when printing in black and white, without disclosing this fact or
providing consumers with the option to disable it.Which? printer ink

denied the claims and the case reached a settlement that included HP
agreeing to make changes to some ‘low ink’ messages as well as amending
information given in user manuals. According to the proposed settlement,
HP will also contribute up to $5,000,000 in e-credits to be distributed
among owners of affected US purchased HP printers who file a claim. The
settlement covers US-purchased models only and claimants will not
receive more than $6 per claim. With a limit of $5,000,000 HP e-credit
available, more claimants could result in people receiving even less.
