NEW
YORK–Jan.2006–HP today announced that it earned revenues of more
than $3 billion in its last fiscal year from global retailers looking
to gain new operational efficiencies and greater business flexibility.
The
milestone, announced at the National Retail Federation Convention &
Expo, includes deals with some of the world’s leading retail brands —
7-Eleven, Chico’s, Staples and Starbucks — that draw from the broad
range of HP’s retail offering.
Additionally, HP unveiled Retail
Agility Services that provide on-site break/fix and maintenance of
point-of-sale systems, whether they are HP or legacy devices; a retail
media solution to create and manage interactive online training and
information for retailers’ employees and customers; and an offering
with Cyclone Commerce to help retail pharmaceutical companies fight
counterfeit drug activity.
These solutions from HP Services help
retailers design, deploy and manage mission-critical IT environments
that align with business priorities. This helps ensure measurable value
is derived from IT investments, and business operations remain
uninterrupted — something particularly relevant in the fast-paced
retail market. In addition, HP works with industry-leading partners
such as Intel and Microsoft to help customers implement IT solutions
incrementally, without large upfront capital investments.
“HP has
become a definitive force in the retail vertical as one of the world’s
leading retail technology providers,” said Greg Buzek, president, IHL
Consulting Group. “The company is increasingly providing
retail-specific solutions like the Retail Agility Services, rp5000
point-of-sale system and other technology that shows they understand
key retailer challenges and are focused to respond to retailers’ needs.”
HP
provides retailers with complete in-store and store-to-headquarters IT
infrastructure. The company’s retail-focused portfolio includes HP
rp5000 point-of-sale (POS) solutions, business continuity and
availability solutions, printers and services, industry-standard HP
ProLiant and BladeSystem platforms, HP Integrity servers and HP
Integrity NonStop servers, HP StorageWorks and HP OpenView enterprise
IT management software.
Retailers increasingly have turned to HP to
help migrate from propriety systems to lower cost, open- and
industry-standard-based platforms. In fact, more than 150,000 of the HP
rp5000 POS solutions have been committed to retail businesses since its
introduction two years ago.
“HP offers retailers greater choice,
flexibility and the highest availability of service through our modular
systems, our commitment to open standards and our industry-leading
partnerships,” said Carol Potts, vice president, Retails Sales and
Solutions, HP. “We aim to help retailers improve the gold standard in
customer service by adding speed, efficiency and an element of
personalization to the shopping trip, making for happier customers.”
Leading retailers rely on HP to better serve customers
Staples
Inc., the world’s largest office products company, is one of HP’s
largest consumer reseller partners and a significant HP enterprise
customer. Understanding the need to keep its critical business
applications up and running 24 hours a day, Staples recently invested
millions of dollars in HP 9000 PA-RISC servers operating on the HP-UX
11i platform and HP ProLiant servers.
“The HP server environment
delivers numerous benefits, including higher performance, lower total
cost of ownership, increased utilization, and support for multiple
back-office and in-store operation systems,” said James E. Farris (Ed),
senior manager, IS Retail, Staples Inc.
Chico’s FAS, Inc. operating
under the Chico’s White House/Black Market and Soma by Chico’s names,
has chosen to broaden its portfolio of HP technologies which already
includes an HP Integrity Superdome server as the foundation for its
underlying enterprise resource planning system.
Chico’s has selected
the HP rp5000 POS platform and begun deploying more than 400 of the
devices in its retail stores across North America. A specialty retailer
of private label, sophisticated, casual-to-dressy clothing, intimates,
complementary accessories, and other non-clothing gift items, Chico’s
also selected HP Services to integrate and deploy the technology.
The
rp5000 technology will allow Chico’s to develop and deploy new features
and applications, giving the company the flexibility to meet the
ever-changing needs of its retail environment.
The HP rp5000 POS
system combines the functionality of popular proprietary systems with
the low price, flexibility and manageability of PC-based POS systems.
Designed to withstand the rigors of the retail environment, the HP
rp5000 offers enhanced peripheral support via powered serial and USB
ports as well as enhanced power and cooling capabilities. In addition,
the Intel® eATX design allows for a longer lifecycle of the product.
Starbucks
has selected the HP rp5000 POS device to be used in 500 retail stores
across North America as store manager workstations. HP also designed
and delivered a one-of-a kind, multi-screen video projection wall that
celebrates the unique artistic expressions of Starbucks employees.
The
“Partner Projection Wall” has been unveiled at a Starbucks retail store
in Chicago and uses pre-configured software and HP technology to
control art images on a video wall. Technology delivered includes an HP
Workstation xw4200 with a 300-gigabyte SATA Maxtor hard drive, HD-ready
HP LCD televisions and HP Mobile Noise Canceling Headphones. The
project offers a visual collection of stories, thoughts, ideas and art
expressed by Starbucks barista-artists. Starbucks customers can view
the documentary-style program using the HP technology.
For a
critical IT consolidation in its 5,300 U.S. locations, 7-Eleven, Inc.
relied on HP Services’ customer support organization, the largest IT
support organization in the world, with assistance from HP Factory
Direct. Together, HP and 7-Eleven deployed industry-standard HP
ProLiant ML350 servers with HP Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition II, HP
Systems Insight Manager software, HP OpenView Configuration Managed
solutions, HP LaserJet 1300 series network-attached printers and
ProCurve Networking by HP switches. The support agreement includes
mission-critical operations across all platforms and IT components;
hardware and software support, back-up and recovery, and performance
and support management functions.
The infrastructure upgrade fully
supports 7-Eleven’s dynamic business environment and applications can
be extended to additional stores as needed. Consolidation of
applications onto an HP ProLiant server environment has eliminated the
legacy computers in each of its stores, resulting in a 50 to 70 percent
boost in performance in batch processes, database loads and heavy
transaction processing runs. In addition, uptime and availability have
been improved.
HP OpenView automated change and configuration
solutions have also helped to accelerate the deployment of
business-critical software throughout 7-Eleven’s network of in-store
servers, reducing the time required to deploy major software upgrades
from 30 days to 15 days, a 50 percent improvement in time-to-market.
“HP
has worked with us as a true partner with emphasis on risk mitigation,”
said Keith Morrow, chief information officer, 7-Eleven. “HP met the
targeted completion date by using highly professional HP Services
experts and a proven process to deploy industry-standard solutions.”
Boyner
Holding, one of the largest retailers in Turkey, made a multi-million
dollar investment in HP technology as it migrated to a new SAP
environment. HP Services enabled the company to quickly and
successfully replace numerous Sun servers, storage and tape libraries
with industry-standard Intel Itanium®-based HP Integrity servers, HP
StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array, HP OpenView Storage Data
Protector and an HP StorageWorks Virtual Library System. -
