INDIA:HP Favors Use of Original Cartridges
According
to a study by TUV SUD PSB, commissioned by HP, in India, original
cartridges produce over 2.4 times the number of pages produced by
refilled cartridges. The study pertains to the Asia Pacific region, and
says that original HP Inkjet print cartridges offer unsurpassed quality
and reliability as compared to refilled and re-manufactured ink
cartridges.Basically, there are two types of refilled cartridges —
organized and unorganized. Organized cartridges are refilled at stores
with recognized brand names; while unorganized ones are those refilled
at stores that are not recognized. In India, there’s a big market for
unorganized refilled cartridges. According to Neel Pillai, marketing
manager (Imaging and Printing Group) of HP Asia Pacific, unorganized
refilled cartridges are the biggest non-originals found in India,
China, and Thailand.
Puneet Chadha, director (Supplies) of HP
India, said, “Ink cartridge buyers in India are not aware of
reliability issues when using refilled cartridges.”One of the main
reasons behind this is the low price that a consumer has to pay to get
the refill, but one does not really think about the hidden costs
involved. These hidden costs involve lesser number of pages yield,
cartridge reliability in case of dead on arrival (DOA), risks
associated with printer break down and cartridge leakage, etc.In India,
one in three (33.8 percent) refilled cartridges are found dead on
arrival (DOA) or failed prematurely, compared to original HP
cartridges, Chadha said.In order to motivate consumers to buy original
cartridges, HP has introduced initiatives such as Best Choice Portfolio
strategy.Under this strategy, a majority of consumers can buy the
Simple Black version of HP Black Inkjet Print cartridge (HP 27b) for Rs
499 for everyday use; while quality-conscious consumers can continue to
opt for the standard version (P+, HP 27a) priced at Rs 843.HP has also
introduced Best Choice Portfolio – Blue (standard) for occasional
users, Green (value) for regular users, and Red (specialty).HP claims
that with its extended range of products, including multi-packs and
combo-packs, consumers can save up to 40 percent on retail prices.
