Xaar gets tough with Chinese workers

Cambridge inkjet company Xaar is getting tough with rebel Chinese staff who went on strike and resigned en masse – but have now gone back to work. The workers emailed Business Weekly today to say they had returned to the Shanghai office rented by the UK technology company.

But Xaar CEO Ian Dinwoodie told Business Weekly that lawyers had been instructed and that the company was giving notice on the tenancy and following through the resignation procedure.

Dinwoodie also revealed that Xaar was dispatching a task force of workers from Cambridge to Shanghai to replace the disgruntled nationals “and ensure Xaar is not being misrepresented.”

He said: “This will probably be for about three months at which point we will see what needs to be put in place for the long term.

“As far as we are concerned the Chinese staff have resigned and we are paying them in lieu of working. We are not diverting from that path. It is incredibly annoying but isn’t materially affecting our commercial operations in China.

“There are a couple of sales guys and some technical support staff among the Chinese workers and they have no access to any Xaar equipment or facilities other than the representative office on which we are now giving notice.”

Robert Li, emailing Business Weekly from a Xaar.com address, attached two letters in the workers’ own language along with translations into English.

He reiterated the workers’ claims that they had gone on strike in December “with strong support from Xaar China customers … to protest the unfair treatment and misconducts from Xaar management towards Xaar China customers and employees. As far as we know, the strike participated by all employees is unprecedented in history for the Chinese representative office of British stock listed companies.”

Li added: “Starting Jan 16, 2012 onwards, we, all Xaar China employees, have returned to the normal work. We have NOT resigned from XAAR. The announcement regarding our resignation made by Xaar publicly on Jan 24, 2012 (LON: XAR, RNS Number 0411W07) is illegal and false.”

Li alleged that Xaar had not investigated the claims as thoroughly as the company had portrayed in its announcement to the stockmarket but Dinwoodie strongly refuted this.

He said: “We fully investigated these claims and found absolutely no evidence whatsoever in support of them. Their claims are unsubstantiated and false.”
