Japan printer shipments and prices fall in H1
TOKYO, Sept 06- Japan’s printer market shrank in the first half of 2006 on falling shipments of inkjet models and declining prices, researcher Gartner Inc.
Shipments by makers such as Canon Inc and Seiko Epson Corp. fell 3.6 percent to 3.65 million units in the six-month period from a year ago. In value terms, the market fell 5 percent to 164.8 billion yen ($1.4 billion).Demand for inkjet printers fell in the six-month period following strong shipments in 2005, Gartner said. Shipments of inkjet printers dropped 31 percent to 1.2 million.However, shipments of multifunctional inkjet machines that can also scan, fax and copy, rose 28 percent to 1.7 million units.Printers maker are trying to switch to more profitable multifunctional models to offset fierce price competition. Such devices also spur demand for consumables such as ink and paper.In the six month period, Canon secured the biggest share in terms of shipment units with 37.5 percent, trailed by Seiko Epson with 35.3 percent. Third-ranked was Hewlett-Packard Co. with 7.9 percent, and Brother Industries Ltd. came in fourth with 4.9 percent.
