lack Of Empties Forces Clover To Layoff 15% of Employees

Cartridges Are Us in Ithaca has announced a lay off of 15 percent of its 430 employees due to a lack of a sufficient number of empty cartridges. The company, part of Clover Technologies Group, remanufactures used inkjet cartridges and laid off about 64 people on Thursday.
CEO Steve Iocco said that a supplier of empties is now returning them to the original manufacturer. That company is destroying them.“(Clover Technologies) is disappointed that the decisions of other entities in the industry not to provide empty inkjet printer cartridges to the aftermarket have led not only to the need for (Thursday’s) reductions but also to a decrease in the availability to consumers of environmentally superior and more affordable printing supplies, and hopes that our industry soon returns to business practices that support both these values,” a Clover Technologies press release stated.

The press release stated that the company appreciated the contributions of the employees affected by the announcement and added that it is,”grateful for their efforts and dedication. Employees impacted by the decision are being provided separation pay and transitional services.”Even though the empty cartridges are fewer, Iocco said the demand is still strong.“The demand exceeds the empties,” he said.Iocco said the company is not expecting to lay off any more people.“This should do it,” he said.

Ithaca City Manager Chelsey Foster said that any time there are layoffs there is always concern.“We hope they can find other opportunities in the area,” he said. “We are happy to have Cartridges Are Us in the city – they are by far our largest employer. It’s a company with a strong entrepreneurial spirit and I’m sure they’ll continue to be successful.”

Lets see now, the original manufactures are getting their used product back maybe to destroy them so it keeps their competition un-competitive. Now isn’t this a similar situation that happened to " CAU when " Clover " aggressively took over ‘CAU " because they would not sell out to Clover ? What comes around…

So, as I read it, the OEM’s admit that Cartridges Are Us make a superior product at a cheaper rate. So the easiest way to compete is to bid more for the empties? Aren’t ink cartridges made of plastic? Do we have any plastics companies in Gratiot? Let’s support them in the American way… In your face! Go get them CAU.

I think it’s a shame that governments do not legislate in order to force OEM companies to allow the resale of their cartridges. What’s worst is that they make very timid efforts to recuperate the empties in the first place. What really worries me though is the growing presence of asian products that result in zero value empties that are landing up in our landfills. http://www.pyrolaser.com
