Singapore,
NOV. 2005 – According to findings from IDC’s Asia/Pacific Quarterly
Multifunction Peripherals (MFP) Tracker, a total of 1.3 million units
of inkjet MFPs were shipped to the Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan)
market in the second quarter of 2005. This represents a sequential
growth of 13% and a robust 50% year-on-year growth.Overall, IDC
expects the Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) inkjet MFP market to grow by
slightly more than 40% by the end of 2005 to reach 5 million units,
representing a year-on-year growth of 23% in revenue terms. This will
grow to more than 6 million units in 2006 especially as more consumers
embrace this technology following the fall in inkjet MFP prices.“HP
took the top spot in the PRC market and continued to strengthen its
leading position in the burgeoning market,” remarked Natasha Tan,
Senior Program Manager of Peripherals Research at IDC Asia/Pacific. “HP
made full use of favorable conditions and rode on the rebounded Chinese
economy in 2Q 2005 by offering various channel incentives to entice its
partners to stock-up.”“The Singapore inkjet MFP market fell by
12% in terms of units shipped over the last quarter as IT purchases
witnessed a seasonal slowdown in Q2. This cyclical recurrence was
further aggravated by the absence of HP’s bundling program with
Starhub, which saw its shipments taking a dive this quarter,” said Ms.
Tan. “Nonetheless, IDC expects the market to see a turnaround in 3Q
2005 with the COMEX show driving the demand.”In 2Q 2005, Dell
and Lenovo tried to expand their foothold in the inkjet MFP space in
Asia/Pacific by initiating several bundling promotions. Dell also
worked on expanding its channel networks across Asia/Pacific while
Lenovo placed much emphasis on clearing its overrun inventories so that
it can refresh its line of inkjet MFPs.According to findings
from IDC’s Asia/Pacific Quarterly MFP Tracker, the average street price
of inkjet MFP fell by 7% over the last quarter to reach US$144 in 2Q
2005, resulting in a year-on-year drop of 17%. In fact, stiff
competition among vendors has resulted in a burgeoning growth of
below-US$100 inkjet MFPs across Asia/Pacific especially in Korea.

Note:
Average Prices refer to the average prices across 12 country markets in
Asia/Pacific and include import duties, custom taxes, sales taxes/VAT.
“This
has been a progressive trend adopted by major vendors in 2Q 2005. For
example, HP adjusted the prices of its PSC series downwards from June 1
in Korea this year,” observed Ms. Tan. “In a bid to expand its foothold
in the Korean market, HP also embarked on a number of bundling offers
with the Internet service providers across the country.”
In
Asia/Pacific(excluding Japan), Indonesia recorded the sharpest fall in
inkjet MFP prices during the quarter. In response to the sequential
drop in inkjet MFP prices by 18% on average, demand for inkjet MFPs
grew by 9% to reach more than 31,000 units in 2Q 2005. It is noteworthy
that demand in the Indonesian inkjet MFP market was largely unaffected
by weaker consumer sentiments brought about by the depreciation of the
Rupiah against the green back. -
