| RICOH POSTS 8.4% PROFIT RISE IN 3Q |

| Ricoh Co Ltd, Japan’s second-largest office machine maker, on Wednesday posted an 8.4 percent rise in operating profit for the three months to December thanks to healthy demand for multi-function printing machines.
The company’s Earnings have been powered in recent years by growing corporate demand for colour and high-speed multi-function printers (MFPs), which can combine the functions of a digital copier, a high-speed printer and a fax machine.
Ricoh’s results come about one week after rival Canon Inc, Japan’s biggest office equipment firm, which recorded a 45 percent rise in net profit for 2003 thanks in large part to steady growth in network- compatible MFPs.
The two Japanese imaging companies, which with Xerox Corp command about half of the global copier market, have been praised by analysts and investors for their focused business strategies and ability to keep production costs low
