Burglary ring shut down, cops say

Itasca police have charged eight Florida men with allegedly stealing $500,000 worth of toner cartridges from a warehouse, shutting down what authorities said was a “highly trained” ring of burglars.The men were caught taking the cartridges from the Nippon Express warehouse in the 1300 block of Hamilton Parkway about 9:55 p.m. Saturday, said Itasca Police Chief Scott Heher. The men were being watched by a multiagency task force started after police in Wood Dale suspected the men of a burglary Sept. 10.In that burglary, in which the men have not been charged, $700,000 worth of plasma TVs were stolen from Mitsui-Soko USA, Inc., a warehouse in the 700 block of Mark Street that forwards freight to businesses, said Wood Dale Deputy Chief Greg Vesta.The men are suspects in another burglary in Addison earlier this year, Heher said. Police suspect the men were selling stolen merchandise on the black market and are investigating whether the men had local contacts, he said.The men knew they were being watched, and ran “countersurveillance” on police, although police knew they were being watched, Heher said.”These were highly trained, highly sophisticated burglars,” said Heher. The men, who are all from south Florida, were transported to the DuPage County Jail and held on $1 million bail.Charged with burglary were Roberto Roque Castillo, 40; Felipe Castell Jr., 30; Rigoberto Fernandez, 39; Adalberto Valdes, 39; Geovanni Gonzalez, 34; Francisco Perez, 28; Armando Fernandez, 24; and Otto Guerra, 36.Police have issued a warrant for Andres Lozano, 23, of Boca Raton, Fla.The task force included investigators in Addison, Bensenville, Roselle, Elk Grove Village, the DuPage County sheriff’s and state’s attorney’s offices, the FIAT response team, U.S. Marshal’s Office Great Lakes Task Force and the FBI-O’Hare Airport Office.
