RATON — The city of Berkeley, Calif., said Office Depot Inc. has agreed
to reimburse the city approximately $289,000 after city officials
discovered overcharges during an audit of their office supplies
contract with the company. In a letter sent today to the city’s mayor
and city council, city manager Phil Kamlarz said that the overcharges
occurred between July 1, 2006 and March 31, 2009. Kamlarz wrote that
Boca Raton-based Office Depot has been responsive and “met with us in
good faith.” But he added that, from now on, “monitoring of the office
supply contract will be done on a quarterly basis to ensure compliance
with the terms of the original request for proposal.”On March 17,
Berkeley finance director Robert Hicks told the city council that at
least $250,000 in overcharges had been found; the final number was
bumped to $289,000 to include portions of time not checked in the
preliminary audit.
