Oji Paper Ordered to Pay 590M Yen in Damages to Seiko Epson
    Tokyo,
July , 2008  – Tokyo District Court on Tuesday ordered Oji Paper Co to
pay damages worth 590 million yen to Seiko Epson Corp. <6724>
over its sale of a polluted land plot.
    Seiko Epson bought 30,000
square meters of land in Shiojiri in the central Japan Prefecture of
Nagano from Oji in July 2000.The precision equipment maker later found
that the plot was polluted with toxic substances such as
polychlorinated biphenyl and dioxin. The firm had to depollute 8,300
tons of soil.Polluted soil is recognized as a defect, presiding judge
Yutaka Watanuki said, approving much of the 640-million-yen damages
sought by Seiko Epson.Seiko Epson said the ruling was reasonable. Oji
said it will consider its response after examining the verdict.
