Latest phone scam involves copier toner cartridges
KIRKSVILLE – The Kirksville Police Department is warning residents of a phone scam involving an individual claiming to be an agent of a local retail office supplier.According to a KPD press release submitted Wednesday afternoon, a local non-profit organization contacted officers Tuesday after an unknown individual requested the name and model number of the group’s photocopy machine.Another unknown male who identified himself as an agent of a local office supplier followed up on the initial phone call a few days later. The caller informed the organization the prices had been raised to the $300-400 price range for the photocopier’s replacement toner cartridges. The employee subsequently researched the cost of the replacement cartridges, and found they normally cost a significant amount less than the quoted price. When the salesman called back, the employee confronted him with the research information, and the caller immediately hung up the phone. The police department requests if anyone has been contacted in reference to this scheme to contact them immediately.A name and phone number of the salesman would also be helpful.”Be cautious of all unsolicited sales calls,” said Cpl. James Holzmeier. “Remember to verify all information that’s given to you before you make any purchases.”
