    By Josh Hicks

The White House on Thursday announced that President Obama would nominate acting public printer Davita Vance-Cooks to head the Government Printing Office.

The president’s pick, if confirmed by the Senate, would be an historic one, placing the first female and African American at the helm of the 152-year-old GPO.

Vance-Cooks, who joined the GPO in 2004, has held her current position since December 2011. Prior to that, she served numerous roles with agency, including chief of staff, managing director of publications, and deputy managing director of customer services.

Vance-Cooks has spearheaded an effort to rebrand the GPO and keep it relevant in the digital era. Reporter Lisa Rein wrote about those efforts in a Washington Post Style article.
