The Indiana Civil Rights Commission found probable cause that a Warsaw company discriminated against a pregnant employee.

According to a press release issued Friday, the Warsaw location of R.R. Donnelley & Sons fired a woman employed there as a “contingent material handler” after she asked the company to accommodate her pregnancy.

R.R. Donnelley & Sons is a large international printing company, ranking 264th in the Forbes 500 list of America’s largest businesses. The Chicago company has offices globally, including Fort Wayne and Warsaw, according to its website.

The unnamed woman was hired at the company’s Warsaw plant in August 2013, and among the requirements of the job was stacking printed pages onto pallets, lifting loads of up to 50 pounds, according to a news release.

When she became pregnant, she went to her supervisor in March, saying she was having issues lifting the pallets. She presented the supervisor with a physician’s statement, saying she was prohibited from lifting more than 20 pounds for six months, according to the release.

Later that month, her supervisor placed her on light duty, operating a hand-feeding machine for about two hours. But that evening, she was called into an office and fired because “they could not accommodate her restrictions,” according to the release.

An attempt to obtain a comment from R.R. Donnelly’s Chicago office was unsuccessful Friday afternoon.
