The Chicago-based Fortune 500 company filed a notice earlier this month informing state labor officials of the cuts at the 140 South Road facility. The effective date is April 7.

The notice did not provide additional details, and the company didn't immediately respond to voicemails left at the Bedford facility. A person who answered the company’s phone line for media calls said, “I’m instructed not to talk to the press” and transferred the call.

According to the company’s website RR Donnelly has 43,000 employees in 34 countries. The Bedford location is said to be a “full-service commercial printing facility that delivers a complete range of sheet-fed and web printing products, including brochures, annual reports, catalogs, booklets, direct mail, pocket folders and calendars.” Clients include corporations, design firms and advertising agencies, the website adds.

In the three months that ended in September, the company reported that net sales decreased by nearly 5 percent, or $85.4 million, due to the disposition of its print logistics business and changes in foreign exchange rates. Higher volume in the business services section of the company offset some of the decrease, RRD said.

“We continue to assess opportunities to reduce our cost structure and enhance productivity throughout the business,” the company said in its Q3 filing. “During the three months ended September 30, 2018, we realized cost savings from previous restructuring activities including the reorganization of administrative and support functions across all segments, as well as facility consolidations.”
