Samsung aspires to be No 1 in laser printers
SAMSUNG wants to be the world’s No 1 laser printer vendor, according to Jang Jae Lee, vice-president of its digital media network and digital printing division.
“Eventually, our printing division will be one of Samsung’s core businesses,” he told reporters during an interview at the recently concluded CeBIT trade fair in Hanover, Germany.
According to him, Samsung’s printing division has already beaten more established competitors to reach the No 2 position globally for the monochrome laser printer segment, after only being in operation for about five years.
“Our most serious competitor now is Hewlett-Packard,” said Jang.
“According to plan, we can be No 1 in the monochrome laser printer market by the end of this year.
“And by 2010, (we will be No 1 in the) multifunction printer segment,” he said.
To achieve its goals, Samsung would strengthen its internal structure, develop more corporate printer models for both colour and monochrome printouts, as well as embark on an aggressive recruitment drive for professionals who are experienced in selling to the corporate market.
The South Korean electronics giant said it would strive to give its customers “more for less” with its products.
“We will pay close attention to matters like ease-of-use and functionalities,” said Jang.
Samsung, which previously focused on the personal and small office, home office (SOHO) market, has spearheaded its foray into the corporate printer marketplace with the unveiling of its ML-4550 printer at CeBIT this year.
The ML-4550 is its fastest monochrome laser printer, which can churn out prints at speeds of up to 40 pages per minute (ppm).
Samsung also introduced a range of new multifunction laser printers for the SOHO segment, including the CLP-300 series and CLX-3160 range – claimed to be the world’s smallest laser printers and world’s smallest multifunction colour laser printers, respectively.
According to Philip Tan, executive vice-president overseeing Samsung’s South-East Asian corporate business, both mono and colour lasers sales are poised to become a strong growth engine for Samsung Malaysia.
He said Malaysia is the second fastest growing printer market in the region after Thailand.
“Samsung already has a solid foundation in the Malaysian market and we will continue to strengthen our position,” Tan added
