Staples likes Maitland — if taxpayers kick in $1 million
    FLORIDA January , 2006
Word is that Staples, the office-products company, will add 340 jobs and lease 60,000 square feet in Maitland — if it can get some tax breaks to do the deal.
Nothing official yet, but the buzz in economic-development circles is that the company is asking for more than $1 million in incentives to open a call center to support its online business sales.
The average salary would be $40,000. That’s not huge. In fact, it’s just 16 percent above the Orange County average of $34,413.
Staples apparently is weighing the Summit Place location against a site in Texas.
Maitland officials intend to ask Orange County for assistance in funding the tax breaks. It made a similar deal with the county for the expansion of Electronic Arts.
I’m told Staples wants to open its operation this spring. The building is in good shape. It formerly housed the call center operations of the Charles Schwab brokerage.
No word on any of this from Staples
