Taiwan : Printer Sales in Taiwan Down 11% Year Over Year

Taipei, April 2012–Sales of printers in Taiwan, including SFPs (single-function printers) and MFPs (multifunctional printers), reached 150,314 units in the fourth quarter of 2011, down 11.9% quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) and down 10.9% year-on-year (YoY), according to the IDC Taiwan Quarterly SFP and MFP Tracker report, which attributes the sales decline to mainly seasonal factors or off-season effects.

Some 37,510 inkjet SFPs were sold in the fourth quarter, down 17.1% QoQ and down 16.7% YoY.

The mainstream inkjet MFP shipments totaled only 112,804 units, down 10.1% QoQ and an 8.8% YoY decline. Inkjet MFPs accounted for about 75% of the overall inkjets in the period, and among them about 40% were models with facsimile function.

Joey Yen, senior market analyst of peripherals at IDC Taiwan, pointed out that the inkjet printer market in Taiwan is mature with more affordable prices. But the increasingly digitized daily life lowers the demand for printing out photos or documents, a trend underlined with increasing Internet applications and PC/smartphone sharing functions. Both lower printing demand and increasing popularity of laser printers are driving down inkjet shipments, as well as forcing makers to develop new applications.
