The City Of Sidney Australia Is Going Paperless
    By Michael Seffrin

SIDNEY — Sidney City Council is getting on board with the city’s move toward a paperless system. Council decided Monday night to use tablet computers to replace the stacks of paper they have been using.

The change is expected to save the city $6,726 annually, according to a report presented to council by Joel Glass, the city’s IT manager.

The total decrease in expenditures is $9,350, made up of copy costs, $2,100, and clerk overtime, $7,250. Annual expenditures will be $2,624 for a mobile software yearly maintenance fee.

Purchase of 16 tablets for council and senior staff will total $5,120. Glass said the payback period for that cost will be less than year.

Glass provided two other scenarios based on using laptop computers instead of tablets and tablets with air cards (wireless adapter used for connecting to cellular networks).

Glass outlined the pros and cons of tablets and laptops. Most council members favored tablets, which are smaller and lighter and have longer-lasting batteries. However, it is more difficult to print from a tablets.

Councilman Chuck Craynon wondered about printing documents requested by constituents. City staff members pointed out that documents, including the council agenda packet, already are available on the city’s website and can be printed from there.

City Manager Mark Cundiff said a training session on the new tablets will be held for council members.
