DecaBDE is difficult to degrade in the environment and is suspected of having a long-term harmful effect on embryonic development. Therefore, the Federal Environment Agency assesses DecaBDE as a bioaccumulating, toxic substance and the EU classifies it as so-called POP (Persistant Organic Potent).ETIRA Secretary General Vincent van Dijk was also shocked by the new analyzes: "These results give cause for serious concern. They show that in the case of DecaBDE we are not dealing with individual cases but with a systemic problem of Asian Newbuilt cartridges containing extremely high concentrations of a dangerous substance. Many Asian manufacturers even claim that their cartridges are REACH and RoHS compliant – but obviously they are not. We at ETIRA therefore call on the relevant EU and national authorities to remove the contaminated cartridges from the market as soon as possible! "The fact that Amazon in this scandal once again plays an inglorious role as the main hub for the import of contaminated cartridges to Europe, not really surprising: Even with other violations of Chinese companies such as systematic VAT fraud, the US online giant was the focus of criticism.With the illegal use of DecaBDE, the affected Asian manufacturers not only violate European law: Worse, they threaten the health of unsuspecting users to the brunt. At least now, the authorities must wake up and react, because it is no longer just a distortion of competition but the threat to European consumers with a prohibited, carcinogenic substance! Now it is time to finally apply consistent existing European laws and stop the import of Asian Newbuilt cartridges to Europe until all suppliers have proven that their products are actually 'clean' and legally compliant.
