Worldwide OEM Printer sales slip in third quarter 2011

The latest data from research house Context has revealed that sales of inkjet and laser printers in EMEA slipped 0.6% year-on-year in unit terms for the third quarter of 2011. Context reckons that Europe’s economic slowdown took its toll on both business and consumer demand.

“In Western Europe, the effects of the economic slowdown were felt by those countries most affected, especially Greece where printer sales fell 35.1% in the third quarter of 2011 compared to last year with sales down 6.1% in Spain,” said Jeremy Davies, co-founder and CEO at Context.

In France, sales were essentially flat with a year-on-year growth of 0.2%. Germany fared a little better, with a unit sales growth of 1% over the same period. The UK stood out from other countries with printer sales growing 6% year-on-year due in part to strong all-in-one inkjet printer sales that increased 9.6%.

Within the wider EMEA region there was considerable variation with sales in Western Europe dropping 1% while printer sales in Africa climbed an impressive 21.7%. The Context data indicated that all-in-one inkjet sales were up 34.4% year-on-year in Africa during the third quarter of 2011, while laser printer sales rocketed 71.4%.

In Central and Eastern Europe, printer sales fell 7.4% over the same period, mainly due to a sharp drop in demand for inkjet printers, according to Context. Printer sales in the Middle East grew 4.2% on the back of strong demand for copier-based multi-function printers (MFPs).

All-in-one inkjet printers were the leading product category accounting for 68.1% of printers sold in EMEA. Despite significant market share, all-in-one inkjets actually saw unit sales decline 2.1% year-on-year in the third quarter, with the largest decline of 20.0% in Central and Eastern Europe. Sales of all-in-one lasers climbed 22.7% in the quarter, while copier-based MFP sales jumped 19.5%.

During the third quarter of 2011, HP accounted for 44.4% of inkjet and laser printers sold, followed by Canon with a 21.4% share of unit sales. Epson controlled 14.6% of the market while Brother picked up 6% and Samsung grabbed 5.6% market share. Lexmark’s market share stood at 2.5%.

Senior executives from Context, including Jeremy Davies, will be participating in the conference programme at DISTREE EMEA 2012, which takes place in Monaco from February 7-10th.
