Xerox Cutting 189 U.S. Jobs in Research & Engineering

Xerox Corp., in times both good and tough, has been aggressive in recent years about keeping costs down. And 2012 is no exception for the printing and business services company, which notified a number of workers this week at its Rochester-area operations about job cuts.

Xerox employs 6,300 people locally and would not give specifics on the local impact of this latest round of restructuring. Spokesman Bill McKee said that “while every position affected is significant, the numbers are relatively small in relationship to our 140,000 global employees.”

The company said the layoffs are in the product research and engineering areas.According to paperwork given to one affected employee, the restructuring involves 189 positions companywide.

The cuts come as Xerox is beefing up its local employment numbers in other ways. It plans to open later this year at its Webster campus a customer service and call center for its its business process outsourcing arm. The center ultimately is expected to employ close to 500 people.

In a conference call last month with Wall Street analysts, CEO Ursula Burns said the company — which spent $61 million on severance payments in the last three months of 2011 — expected to spend “a modest amount” in the early part of this year to offset some rising costs.

Whether the company does further restructuring throughout the year “really depends on the environment,” Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri said.

Xerox lays off 120 in Wilsonville
Xerox Corp on Wednesday is laying off workers at its Wilsonville campus as part of a previously announced corporate restructuring.
Erin Isselmann, a spokeswoman in Wilsonville for the Norwalk, Conn.-based company , declined to say the exact number of layoffs, though she said the job cuts are companywide and small “relative to our 140,000 global employees.”Xerox reported paying $66 million in severance costs in the fourth quarter to 1,000 employees and said it expected continued restructuring in the first quarter. The cuts coming down Wednesday will eliminate some positions in product research and engineering, Isselman said.

Xerox employs 1,284 in Wilsonville where, among other things, it develops solid ink printer technology.Xerox spokesman Bill McKee said the company continues to transition into a services-based business.Xerox’s services offerings and accounts represented more than half of the company’s $22.6 billion in annual revenue last year.“It’s a fact that the nature of our work force will change because of that,” he said. “The company will continue to have a need for engineering talent, but the makeup of the organization is definitely making a shift towards service-based employees.”
