Xerox Laying Off More Than 500 Workers in North Carolina
    By Lauren K. Ohnesorge

An affiliate of Xerox Corp. (NYSE: XRX) is laying off 508 employees at its Cary call center. The job cuts go into effect Nov. 14.

Xerox Commercial Services notified its employees on Sept. 9, says spokesperson Bill McKee. Specifically, the impacted employees come from Xerox Business Services, which is a division of XCS.

“These reductions, while very difficult decisions, reflect the changing business requirements of our clients,” he says, adding that Xerox expects to place more than half of those employees in other positions within “other lines of business in Cary.”

According to a notice the company filed with the Employment Security Commission, the terminations are “due to a change in business conditions” and primarily impact customer care assistant positions.

“We continue to hire new employees in many locations and will continue to hire in Cary to meet the needs of other clients,” McKee says. “Different call centers require different skill sets. At times we may ramp up or slow down depending on the changing needs of our clients. While at this time we are closing this specific business operation, at the same time we expect to be hiring several hundred employees for other lines of business.”

Separation packages are being provided to qualifying employees, he says.

The move comes a month and a half after Xerox Business Services announced 67 jobs cuts in August. The same business unit in January signed a lease renewal for its anchor office space at Crescent Green in Cary.

Xerox has about 4,400 employees in North Carolina, including 1,500 in Cary and 3,200 in the Triangle.
