Xerox in Jamaica is expanding its operations in Kingston with the addition of three call centres that are expected to create 860 jobs.

Xerox Jamaica has also expanded further in Montego Bay where it took up 25,000 square feet of leased space in the new Barnett Tech Park, creating around 450 jobs in the process. The company is expected to acquire additional space at Barnett Tech Park in the near future.

"Between our new operations in Montego Bay and in Kingston, we'll be adding almost 2,000 additional jobs, which will grow our workforce to about 7,000," said Xerox Vice-President for Corporate Communications Kevin Lightfoot.

"These facilities will support expanding services to current clients and new clients," Lightfoot said.

Xerox currently has five sites in Montego Bay and two in Kingston. The other three Kingston centres are all to go live in 2015. The first facility at Grenada Way will be about 33,000 square feet and employ up to 450; the second at 7 Haining Road will be about 13,000 square feet and employ 25, while Pawsey Road will span 21,000 square feet and create another 385 jobs, said Lightfoot, who declined to discuss the cost attached to the Jamaican expansion, saying all the arrangements have not been finalised.

    Security and accessibility

The communications manager listed security and access to transport among the factors prioritised in the site selections.

"Xerox has extensive property specifications to which we adhere, including meeting our stringent environmental, health, safety and security criteria, to achieve a good employee working environment. We also consider good local transporting links, available manpower to service our clients' requirements, and where we can provide cost-competitive service," said Lightfoot.

He said the company had no current or future interest in owning or constructing buildings for its operations in Jamaica.

"Our global policy is not to own buildings; we are tenants, not specialist in being landlords. We already have leases on seven buildings in Montego Bay, including the new 25,000 square feet Barnett building, and the future 50,000 square feet second Barnett building at the new Tech Park which is due for completion in the first half of 2016. We continue to assess our property needs in Jamaica as our client growth continues, and would take on any appropriate additional property that is required," said the Xerox spokesman.

Xerox is a global business services, technology and document management company, providing business process services, printing equipment, hardware and software technology for managing information. It has a global footprint in 180 countries, with "55,000 customer-care agents around the world who handle more than 2.5 million interactions daily from 160 facilities in about 30

languages", the company said in a release last Wednesday.

Xerox's Country Manager Leroy Reid was quoted as saying that the company is the largest business process outsourcing provider in Jamaica.
