tonerKeymasterTwo Sides Paper Industry Lobbyist Highlights Surge in Greenwashing Cases.
Two Sides, a global advocacy group for the paper industry, has challenged over 2,800 companies that have made misleading environmental claims, with more than 1,260 organizations changing or removing anti-paper messaging in response. This growing trend of greenwashing is being fueled by economic pressures, as many companies shift from paper-based to digital communication to reduce costs. However, these transitions are often accompanied by misleading claims such as “Go Green – Go Paperless” or “Choose e-billing and help save a tree,” which are not supported by facts and misrepresent the environmental impact. As part of its ongoing campaign, Two Sides has addressed greenwashing by engaging with over 2,800 organizations globally. In North America alone, nearly 200 companies, from large corporations to small local utilities, have revised or removed these misleading statements.
The push for digital communications often overlooks consumer preferences. According to the 2023 *Two Sides Trend Tracker* report, 81% of U.S. consumers believe they should have the option to choose how they receive communication, and do not want to be forced into digital-only formats.
Jules Van Sant, Executive Director of Two Sides North America, emphasizes the harm caused by greenwashing claims: “These misleading messages not only violate environmental marketing regulations but also undermine an industry with a strong and continually improving environmental track record. A thriving market for forest products like paper supports sustainable forest management and helps maintain healthy, renewable forests. In North America, forests are growing by the equivalent of 1,200 NFL football fields every day. Keeping these forests sustainable is critical for both the environment and our industry.”
Van Sant adds, “It’s essential to challenge these false claims to protect the positive environmental record of our industry. We are committed to defending the livelihoods of the 925,000 people working in the forest, paper, packaging, and print sectors from the detrimental impact of deceptive greenwashing.”
The anti-greenwashing campaign remains a top priority for Two Sides, which continues to urge companies to refrain from making unsupported environmental claims about paperless solutions.
“We appreciate the cooperation of the many organizations that have removed or corrected their greenwashing claims, and we are grateful for the continued support from industry stakeholders and the public in identifying new cases of greenwashing,” Van Sant concludes.
