I am continually and utterly mystified by the destructive life cycle of many laser toner cartridges. Large manufactures like HP, Brother, Lexmark, Xerox and Samsung manufacture products overseas for the US market. Many of the empty products make their way back overseas to be scavenged. The carbon emissions and environmental damage caused by this are extreme. Most large companies, Colleges, Universities, state, local and federal agencies all buy these new, expensive, single use OEM products.

10 years ago the US had thousands of toner cartridge remanufacturing companies. These were primarily locally owned and operated companies who collected empties in their own markets and then rebuilt and reused the cartridges locally or regionally multiple times. Then came the new compatibles or clone cartridges, virtually all are made in China. These are low quality, inexpensive, new plastic cartridges that are often patent infringing. These are almost always sold at prices far below the sustainable US remanufacturing cost. This resulted in the decimation of the domestic remanufacturing industry. Additionally, vast numbers of domestic, local jobs were lost and environmental advantages that come with closed loop local reuse or multi use products all but vanished. The truly shocking thing about these Chinese new compatibles is nearly all of them end up in US landfills. This is because they can’t be remanufactured and have a negative materials extraction value.

It is gut wrenching and completely beyond reason that most Federal, state and local government agencies issue specifications that call for and even mandate remanufactured laser toner be used. But yet they are being duped in masse into buying toxic Chinese compatibles instead. When the quality turns out to be insufficient they move right back to the expensive OEM name brand products.

Help us close the loop, don’t sell your empty toners To China!
know where your empty toners go and support US remanufacturing.
