HP Inc. is once again facing an antitrust challenge in federal court as a group of printer owners asks an Illinois judge to allow their amended lawsuit against the company to move forward. The plaintiffs, led by HP customer Andrew Kullgren and other consumers, allege that HP illegally monopolizes the aftermarket for replacement ink cartridges through its controversial Dynamic Security technology, which uses firmware updates and chip authentication to block certain third-party ink products from functioning in HP printers. The consumers argue that once customers purchase an HP printer, they are effectively locked into buying higher-priced HP-branded ink, reducing competition and limiting consumer choice. The lawsuit follows a previous court ruling that dismissed the original complaint while allowing the plaintiffs to refile with additional allegations supporting their antitrust claims. HP denies wrongdoing, maintaining that Dynamic Security is designed to protect printer performance, security, and the customer experience. The case is being closely watched by the imaging industry because its outcome could influence future legal challenges involving printer manufacturers’ efforts to restrict the use of third-party ink and toner cartridges.
