Epson has delivered another potentially devastating blow to Chinese Clone ink-cartridge businesses, with the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) issuing a General Exclusion Order in Investigation No. 337-TA-1452 covering products that infringe five Epson patents—and issuing cease-and-desist orders against U.S. respondents Mountain Peak, Inc. and Straightouttaink, LP. The controversy goes beyond two companies: the original USITC investigation identified Mountain Peak as doing business as Billiontree Technology USA/Toner Kingdom, while Straightouttaink operated under several aftermarket ink-selling names, highlighting the complex network behind compatible-cartridge distribution in the United States. The investigation also involved overseas cartridge suppliers, including companies based in China and Hong Kong, putting renewed attention on the supply chain behind inexpensive Epson-compatible cartridges entering the U.S. market. The August 13, 2026 determination could give Epson a powerful weapon against infringing products regardless of which foreign supplier attempts to bring them into America. For Chinese aftermarket manufacturers, U.S. importers and online sellers, the message is blunt: changing company names, distributors or packaging may not protect a cartridge if its underlying technology falls within the patent claims covered by the order. With Mountain Peak and Straightouttaink now facing cease-and-desist restrictions, the Epson case could become a closely watched test of how aggressively the USITC and U.S. Customs can disrupt the flow of allegedly infringing compatible ink cartridges and potentially expose the broader China-linked aftermarket supply chain to increased patent-enforcement pressure.
