Another highly produced YouTube video is taking aim at HP’s print and supplies business, this time with the provocative headline, “Japan’s 1-Cent Ink Just Killed America’s $12 Billion Printer Scam.” The video follows a growing number of productions attacking HP’s cartridge pricing, proprietary ink systems and highly profitable OEM supplies business, raising questions about who is creating and financing these increasingly aggressive anti-HP videos. The latest production is particularly interesting because, just days earlier, Tonernews.com reported that China’s Ninestar had released its own Zhuhai-produced video targeting HP’s OEM ink business, titled “How China’s $3 Ink Cartridge Breaking A $14 BILLION A Year Empire.” In that video, Ninestar positioned itself as a challenger to HP’s expensive ink cartridge business model while criticizing the OEM’s supplies strategy. Tonernews.com’s Ninestar video report (TonerNews) The appearance of another professionally produced video attacking HP so soon afterward has raised additional questions. Tonernews.com cannot confirm who produced the new “Japan’s 1-Cent Ink” video, whether it originated in China, or whether it has any connection whatsoever to Ninestar or another Chinese ink and toner manufacturer. However, the similarities in messaging and the continued focus on portraying HP’s OEM ink business as exploitative are difficult to ignore.
