Whistleblowers Awarded $37 Million from State in Old Lawsuit Vs. Xerox.
Whistleblowers in Medicaid Fraud Case Awarded $37 Million by Texas After 13 Years.
On January 3, 2025, the state of Texas was ordered to pay three whistleblowers over $37 million following a lengthy, 13-year legal battle involving Medicaid fraud. The case, centered around allegations of improper billing practices by dentists and corporate dental chains, culminated in a significant ruling.
On December 19, 2024, State District Judge Maya Guerra Gamble of Travis County issued the ruling, awarding the whistleblowers 17.5% of a record $200 million settlement reached in 2019 between the state and Xerox State Healthcare (formerly ACS State Healthcare).
According to a statement from the lawyers representing the whistleblowersโAlexandra Alvarez, Joshua LaFountain, and Christine Ellisโthe state had previously settled the lawsuit but was reluctant to pay the required share of the settlement proceeds to the individuals who exposed the fraud, as mandated by Texasโ fraud prevention law.
