Amazon Removes 172 Chinese Counterfeit Toner Listings Following Canon’s Reports.
Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer, has removed 172 listings of third-party laser printer toner cartridges from its platforms in Canada, Mexico and the United States of America, following the infringement reports filed by Canon, a leading company in the field of imaging and optical products. The listings offered toner cartridges from vendors that Canon believes infringed one or more of its patents.Canon has been actively monitoring and enforcing its intellectual property rights on various online platforms, using the Amazon reporting tool, a service offered by Amazon that allows rights holders to report potential infringements. Canon has reported a total of 4,074 listings to Amazon in Canada, Mexico and the United States of America since June 2018, all of which have been removed.
The patents involved in Canon’s reports cover various aspects of the toner cartridge design and function, such as the coupling member, the drum unit, the developing unit, the fixing unit, and the toner supply container. Canon claims that these patents are essential for ensuring the quality and performance of its products, and that it will continue to protect its intellectual property rights against any unauthorized use.
Amazon has a zero-tolerance policy for counterfeit products, and has invested over $700 million and employed more than 10,000 people to combat fraud and abuse on its platforms in 2023. Amazon also works with brands, manufacturers, and law enforcement agencies to prevent, detect, and remove counterfeit products from its marketplace.
Counterfeit toner cartridges pose various risks and challenges for consumers, businesses, and the environment. They can cause poor print quality, damage the printer, void the warranty, and generate more waste and emissions. According to a study by the Imaging Supplies Coalition, the global market for counterfeit imaging supplies was estimated at $3.5 billion in 2019, and the potential environmental impact was equivalent to 54,000 cars on the road for a year.
Canon and Amazon urge customers to be vigilant and cautious when purchasing toner cartridges online, and to look for the genuine Canon logo and hologram on the packaging. Customers can also verify the authenticity of their products by visiting the official Canon website.
