Brother has released a firmware update for its older monochrome laser printers and MFPs in the L5000 and L6000 series (2016–2023). The update adds support for OAuth 2.0, a modern and more secure authentication method. Starting April 2026, Microsoft will require modern authentication for accessing Microsoft 365 / Exchange Online email accounts. The older Basic Authentication (username + password) will be fully discontinued. Devices that still rely on Basic Auth will no longer be able to send emails.
What the Update Enables
With OAuth 2.0, affected Brother printers can continue to use:
- Scan-to-Email / Scan Forwarding
- Email status and error notifications
Without the update, these features would stop working with Microsoft email accounts once Basic Auth is disabled.
Which Models Are Included
The update applies to many L5000/L6000 models, including the MFC-L6800DW, DCP-L5500DN, DCP-L6600DW, and others. Firmware version “ZZC” (Sub1 1.62 / 1.87 / 2.0 depending on the model) introduces the new authentication support. Brother is extending the lifespan of its older printers by adding OAuth 2.0. Users who rely on scan-to-email or email notifications should install the update soon to remain compatible with Microsoft services beyond 2026.
