Canon Exposes Hidden CO₂ Emissions
in Office Printers—Will Other Brands Follow?
Canon Inc. has announced a collaboration with Nidec Corporation to enhance the accuracy of CO₂ emissions data for its office multifunction devices (MFDs). By integrating Nidec’s specific CO₂ emissions data for components used in Canon’s imageRUNNER ADVANCE DX C5840i MFD, Canon aims to provide more precise environmental impact assessments. This initiative is part of Canon’s broader commitment to sustainability and transparency in environmental reporting.
To facilitate this, Canon utilizes the SuMPO EPD (Eco Leaf) environmental label, administered by the Sustainable Management Promotion Organization (SuMPO). This label offers a quantitative disclosure of environmental information throughout the entire life cycle of registered products, enabling customers to make informed choices based on accurate CO₂ emissions data.
This collaboration reflects Canon’s dedication to reducing CO₂ emissions across its product lifecycles and aligns with its environmental targets, including achieving net-zero CO₂ emissions by 2050. The company has also been recognized for its efforts, such as being listed on CDP’s “A list” for climate change transparency and action.
Canon plans to extend this approach to more products in collaboration with additional suppliers, further contributing to the decarbonization of society and promoting resource recycling. For instance, starting in 2025, Canon intends to incorporate recycled steel into its printers and MFDs, aiming to enhance resource recycling while reducing CO₂ emissions across its operations.
Through these initiatives, Canon continues to demonstrate its commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible business practices.
