RICHMOND, VA — Governor Glenn Youngkin has announced that Canon Virginia, Inc., a prominent global manufacturer of consumer and office products, will expand its Newport News facility. This expansion will enable Canon to implement a groundbreaking process for isolating natural silk protein, which will be used in a variety of industries. The project involves retraining 30 employees to operate the new production line, marking one of Canon’s initial steps beyond its traditional focus on image-related products.

“We appreciate Canon Virginia, Inc. for its enduring dedication to Virginia,” Governor Youngkin said. “The company’s move to diversify its product range underscores the dynamic innovation ecosystem in our state. Virginia’s strong business environment, top-tier infrastructure, and skilled workforce continue to attract leading companies like Canon.”

Secretary of Commerce and Trade Caren Merrick also expressed her enthusiasm: “We are excited to see Canon Virginia, Inc. reinvest in Virginia. This expansion is a significant boost to our thriving manufacturing sector.”

Canon Virginia, Inc. President & CEO Shingo Shigeta added, “This expansion allows us to advance our commitment to innovation and growth in Virginia. By scaling our silk protein technology commercially, we aim to create broad applications across various industries. This achievement is made possible by the unwavering support from the Commonwealth of Virginia, Governor Youngkin, the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, the City of Newport News, and the Hampton Roads Alliance.”

Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones praised Canon Virginia’s impact: “Since its establishment here in 1985, Canon Virginia has been a leader in advanced manufacturing and corporate responsibility. We are thrilled about their expansion and eagerly anticipate their future innovations.”

Douglas L. Smith, President and CEO of the Hampton Roads Alliance, commended the city’s support: “Newport News has been instrumental in Canon Virginia’s growth. This expansion reaffirms CVI’s role as a key player in our region’s manufacturing community and enhances our reputation as a center for innovation and manufacturing excellence.”

Senator Mamie Locke also acknowledged the significance of the expansion: “Canon Virginia’s new silk protein production line elevates their role in the Hampton Roads region, setting a new standard for excellence and innovation.”

Canon Virginia, Inc., a subsidiary of Japan’s Canon Inc. and Canon U.S.A., Inc., operates as Canon’s manufacturing, engineering, recycling, and technical support center for the Americas. Located in Newport News, the company is known for its innovative products and advanced manufacturing techniques, including the new silk protein. Canon Virginia also offers services such as injection mold making, contract manufacturing, medical contract manufacturing, and repair and refurbishment.

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership, in collaboration with the City of Newport News, facilitated this project and will support Canon Virginia’s employee retraining through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program. Additionally, the Governor approved a $350,000 performance-based grant from the Virginia Investment Performance Grant to encourage ongoing capital investment by established Virginia companies.
