Epson Granted Default Judgment in Deceptive Advertising Lawsuit.
Epson has secured a default judgment in its lawsuit against Dr. J, an Amazon-selling partner that markets a line of projectors. The court’s ruling comes after Dr. J failed to respond to the lawsuit within the required deadline. In such cases, Epson, as the plaintiff, was able to request a default judgment, resulting in a favorable ruling. The court found that Dr. J misrepresented the quality and performance of its projectors, particularly by falsely claiming a brightness of 15,000 Lumens when independent testing revealed only 300 Lumens—just 2% of the claimed value.

As a result of these deceptive advertising practices, Dr. J has been ordered to pay $580,000 in damages and is banned from selling projectors both online and in retail stores, including major platforms like Amazon and Walmart.com.

Epson, a leading manufacturer of projectors, is no stranger to lawsuits, especially in cases involving misleading claims. Rather than focusing on patent disputes, Epson has been actively challenging false advertising, particularly regarding projector brightness specs. This issue is vital because consumers often rely on brightness figures like Lumens to assess projector performance. Inaccurate claims can significantly impact consumers’ purchasing decisions and the industry’s integrity.

Epson has been vigilant in defending the projector market against misleading metrics such as “Lux,” “LED Lumens,” and “Lamp Brightness,” which lack standardized methodologies. Such claims complicate direct product comparisons, especially on online marketplaces. By securing this judgment, Epson aims to ensure that all projector brands adhere to internationally recognized brightness standards, promoting transparency and empowering consumers to make more informed decisions.

This victory is part of a broader effort by Epson to protect the projector market, following similar legal wins against companies like Formovie, JmGo, and AWOL Vision for deceptive advertising. Epson’s commitment to upholding industry standards ensures that consumers are given accurate and reliable information when choosing projection technology.
