    Lexmark Gets New Ryder One-Million-Square-Foot
Distribution Center for Printers, Copiers, and Toner Cartridges.

Ryder System, Inc., a leading provider of supply chain, dedicated transportation, and fleet management solutions, has opened a new one-million-square-foot distribution center in North America for Lexmark, a global leader in imaging and IoT solutions. The new facility, which is specially designed for Lexmark, combines two of its operations into one, making the process of receiving and shipping printers and copiers, toner cartridges, and spare parts more efficient and customer-friendly.

The distribution center is located in Jeffersonville, Indiana, a strategic location that is close to Louisville, Kentucky, a major hub for river, road, rail, and air transportation. This allows Lexmark to offer 99% same-day shipping and 99% midnight parcel pick-up with next-day air service. It also simplifies the tasks of customizing, configuring, returning, refurbishing, and recertifying equipment, while reducing costs.

“Lexmark’s business depends on timely and accurate equipment handling and delivery, as well as cost competitiveness,” says Norm Brouillette, senior vice president of supply chain for Ryder. “We performed a network analysis that took into account various factors such as markets served, shipping volumes and times, transport costs, nearby ports, real estate prices, and the labor market. We identified the optimal location that would lower Lexmark’s total outbound shipping cost and enhance its two-day transit – plus, it would enable them to offer same-day shipping and next-day air.”

A key component of the customized solution is RyderShareTM, a digital platform that allows all the parties involved in moving goods through supply chains – such as shippers, receivers, carriers, and service providers – to collaborate and see the real-time status of the supply chain and prevent costly delays and improve efficiency. It also uses state-of-the-art business intelligence tools and a proprietary analytics solution to help make better decisions, prepare for unforeseen events, and recover quickly from disruptions.

“Ryder has the technology, solutions, and expertise that we need to keep up with the fast-paced changes in the supply chain environment,” says Billy Spears, senior vice president and chief product delivery officer for Lexmark. “We have had a long and successful relationship with Ryder’s transportation management team, so when we were looking for a new supply chain partner that could help us continue to improve and innovate, it made sense to extend our relationship with Ryder to include their supply chain solutions.”

Ryder offers distribution management; returns handling; equipment restoration and redistribution, which involves fixing returned hardware, recertifying it, and putting it back in stock; bundling hardware and supplies; and customization, which includes adding options, software updates, and customer-setting configurations.

Since 2009, Ryder has been providing Lexmark with comprehensive transportation management solutions, which include network design with continuous improvement built in, carrier procurement and management, shipment planning and execution, and cross-border operations between the United States, Canada, and Mexico – resulting in $1 million in annual savings and more than 98% consistent on-time performance with Ryder’s qualified carriers.
