On November 12, 2025, Canon Inc. was hit with a patent infringement lawsuit in the Western District of Texas, accusing the company of unlawfully using six patents related to camera functionality and wireless communication in its printer products. The lawsuit was filed by Malikie Innovations Ltd. and Key Patent Innovations, two entities representing intellectual property originally developed by BlackBerry.

The patents in question cover technologies critical to the functionality of modern cameras and printers, particularly innovations in wireless connectivity and imaging. The plaintiffs allege that Canon’s printers have incorporated these patented features without obtaining the proper licenses or permissions.

Represented by Reichman Jorgensen Lehman & Feldberg, the plaintiffs are seeking monetary damages and potentially an injunction to stop Canon from using the disputed technologies. This case underscores the ongoing relevance of BlackBerry’s former innovations in the tech world, even as the company has transitioned away from smartphones. With the case still in its early stages, the outcome could have significant implications for Canon, potentially affecting their product offerings and licensing practices moving forward.
