The following was taken from HP’s own website: “We aim to be the world’s most sustainable and just tech company—taking urgent action to combat climate change…” They make further claims on their site such as: “From reforestation to renewable energy and reuse of materials, here’s how we’ll reach our crucial target of net-zero GHG emissions.” Sustainable Impact | HP® Official Site. Yet it appears that HP is on track to displace China as the largest manufacturer of single-use plastics.

It is well known that the United States has an overconsumption problem. Billions of pounds of reusable items from computers and electronics to clothing and mattresses to reusable plastics end up annually in local landfills.

Over the last decade, single-use Chinese-manufactured ink and toner cartridges have displaced local remanufactured ones, turning what was a job-creating industry focused on closed-loop environmentally friendly practices into a rapidly declining industry while at the same time increasing the stream of suspicious-grade single-use plastics into domestic landfills and extinguishing American jobs. It is well documented that huge amounts of these Single-use cartridges are being sold fraudulently to federal, state and local government agencies as remanufactured and or TAA-compliant products.

Currently, all supplies that go into these two new “e” series of printers are single-use consumables.
Now, HP appears to have decided that single-use plastic is the wave of the future, despite their environmental claims. Their launch of their newest monochrome printers, HP LaserJet Pro 4001 and 3001 series they are selling “e” versions for significantly less than their standard models. These “e” versions, models ending ne, dne, dwe, fdwe, and fdne require connection to the internet and registration with HP to print which is leaving users frustrated, to say the least. This new platform makes it much easier for HP to push firmware updates, uninvited and eliminates the user’s option to use anything other than OEM HP cartridges. HP is skirting antitrust laws by offering consumers the choice of purchasing their standard printer which does not require an internet connection and registration to function at a higher price which drives more purchasing to the “e” series, effectively eliminating the consumers’ choice of supplies. Currently, all supplies that go into these two new “e” series of printers are single-use consumables.

Hp’s new ‘instant ink programs’ consumables can’t be reused or remanufactured.
HP is going even further to ensure they dethrone China as the king of single-use printing supplies by pushing consumers to sign up for their instant ink programs. The toner and ink cartridges supplied through this program have even more safeguards to insure they can’t be reused or remanufactured.

When are consumers going to demand that big business, walks their talk with regard to the environment and sustainability?  We must vote with our purchasing power and tell HP and other companies that say one thing while profiting from doing exactly the opposite that we will not be fooled or controlled!
