Some 240 employees of a Sanford-based manufacturing company are being laid off, according to an announcement released Wednesday — the same day workers learned the news.

"Static Control has announced its plan to streamline operations to best focus resources on sales, distribution, research and development within the next few months," according to a news release. "The company will continue to have a limited manufacturing presence for specialty items.

"To do this, Static Control had to restructure the workforce to have a strong path forward for success."

Static Control, which was founded in Sanford in 1986, makes products used in the manufacture of laser toner and inkjet print cartridges. It is one of the largest employers in the area.

In 2015, Static Control, located at 3010 Lee Ave., agreed to a merger with Chinese manufacturer Apex Microelectronics. The news service Reuters reported that Apex purchased a controlling share of the company for $63 million. At the time there were 20 Static Control manufacturing plants worldwide, with 12 based in Sanford.

The purchase took place two years after the 2013 death of Static Control’s founder Ed Swartz.

According to Wednesday's release, employees were notified of the layoffs by a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, which provides three months’ notice instead of the required two months by U.S. labor law.

Their last day of employment is Dec. 13.
