Epson and Shinshu University Conclude Research Agreement
Tokyo FEB 2006 – Shinshu University and Seiko Epson Corp. (Epson) announced January 19 they have come to an agreement aimed at ensuring their mutual growth. The agreement covers areas as diverse as the promotion of joint research and development, exchanges of human resources, education and cultivation of human resources, culture and the arts, contributions to local society, and protection of the environment.
Shinshu University has previously formed partnership agreements with a wide range of organizations including local governments, financial institutions, and corporations. These agreements have aided the development of human resources, contributed to cultural advances, and to the creation of new industries in the local community.
This agreement represents the first time for Shinshu University to enter into a comprehensive partnership with a manufacturer, and the first time for Epson to enter into a comprehensive partnership with a Japanese university.
The university has a particularly strong research and educational background in nanotechnology, IT, environmental studies, and life sciences. In recent times, it has looked to make advances in areas that are problematical in the corporate world such as research into basic technologies, and long-term research projects. The university has been especially active in forming tie-ups with the business world to transfer its technologies, and put its research results into practice.
Epson, which is based near Shinshu University in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, has identified the need to quicken the pace of research and development with greater efficiency in order to produce distinctive products in a timely manner that respond to market demands. Moreover, as technology becomes increasingly complex, it is becoming increasingly difficult for a single company to bear the expense or spend the time to meet all of these challenges.
Going forward, the two organizations hope to create an ongoing system that will maximize resources, and will produce world-class research results. In addition, it is hoped that the partnership will be successful in improving learning, developing new industries, and revitalizing the local economy.
