Digital Photo Printing on the Rise; InfoTrends/CAP Ventures Reveals Impact on Consumables Market in New Study

According To a recent InfoTrends/CAP Ventures study, U.S. consumers spent nearly $2.9 billion printing their digital photos in 2003. The study also indicated that digital camera users print about five times as many photos as non-digital camera users, and that 60% of digital camera users expect their print volume to increase significantly over the next two years.

InfoTrends/CAP Ventures’ new research report entitled Photo Paper & Print Locations: Top-Line Results analyzes trends in digital photo printing, including printing at home, perceptions of photo paper and print locations, and anticipated changes in print location and volume. The report details the results of a survey of U.S. Internet households conducted as part of InfoTrends/CAP Ventures’ ongoing research of consumer digital photo printing.

The study reveals that 48% of survey respondents print photos at their home. Consumers who print 20 or more photos per month seem to have a high satisfaction level with the quality and efficiency of home printing. Those who print less frequently report being less satisfied with photo printing. Ease of use, image quality, and print durability were the top three reasons why consumers print their digital photos at home.

“Although we expect home printing will continue to rise as more households become technologically advanced, the deciding factor may lie in the pricing trends of printer consumables,” commented Merilyn Dunn, a Director at InfoTrends/CAP Ventures. “When asked why they did not print at home, consumers indicated the cost for ink and paper was too high. Printer manufacturers must continue to upgrade their products and offer competitive consumables prices to remain in the game.”
