HP EXPANDS OEM RELATIONSHIPS AND VOICE-ACTIVATED BIZ
HP EXPANDS OEM RELATIONSHIPS TO EXTEND INKJET PRINTING LEADERSHIP

HP Yesterday announced a significant expansion of its original equipment manufacturing (OEM) relationships within its consumer inkjet printing business. HP has concluded agreements for Olivetti Tecnost and Samsung Electronics to use HP’s inkjet technology to expand their printing portfolios. These relationships enable HP to further extend its inkjet business in countries where the OEM partners have a strong presence. The companies partnering with HP benefit by accessing the latest in inkjet printing technology.

“Fierce competition in the printer market requires that we carefully select partners that give us the best chance for success in the market,” said Dr. J.W. Park, executive vice president, Samsung Electronics’ Digital Printing Division. “We are pleased to team with HP to enhance our competitiveness with inkjet printing.”

OEM-branded products based on HP’s technology are expected to begin shipping in late 2003. Specific information about the various products to be introduced will be available through the OEM companies.

“As a worldwide leader in inkjet printing, we are always looking for opportunities to grow our business in new ways,” said Larry Lesley, senior vice president, HP Imaging and Printing Group. “Beyond the relationships announced today, we will be pursuing additional OEM deals with other major consumer electronics companies.”

HP TALKS UP PLAN TO RAISE VOICE-ACTIVATED BUSINESS

When people order products or pay their bills by phone, it doesn’t happen by magic.

Complex software and computer systems are needed. For years, Hewlett-Packard Co. and others have tailored systems to help phone carriers offer such services.

Such specialized telecommunications offerings are a growing part of HP’s business. Though telecom carriers are spending relatively little on new products, demand for voice-activated systems continues to build. HP expects its sales of those types of products to rise at an annual rate of up to 45% the next several years, far higher than its overall sales growth expectations.

To help fulfill its high hopes, HP in July bought privately held PipeBeach AB. The Swedish firm develops software that works with OpenCall, HP’s software platform for the telecom industry.

The companies didn’t disclose the price, and the deal received scant attention. But PipeBeach gives HP software a way to expand its voice-activated market reach. Instead of simply supplying providers, such as telecom carriers, HP can target large corporations looking to tie phones to Internet-based systems.

Attracting Corporate Customers: “We’ve focused on the network service provider market,” said Ed Verney, an HP OpenCall executive. “But there’s nothing that prevents us from using this new technology to address the broader enterprise market.”
